General counsel already have plenty to do—running a legal department is no easy task—but it appears the C-suite is expecting them to get even busier by contributing to business strategy and other company goals.

A new study from executive search firm BarkerGilmore and NYSE Governance Services, a governance, compliance and education solutions provider, shows that corporate executives and directors are looking for general counsel to be more business-minded.

“Business-minded not only refers to the GC being able to be pragmatic, evaluating risk in a business savvy way, but also that they fully understand the business and are embedded with the C-suite and board and viewed as a trusted, strategic adviser,” said John Gilmore, managing partner at BarkerGilmore, in an email.
