Facility solutions provider ABM Industries Inc. announced Monday that Andrea Newborn has been appointed executive vice president, general counsel and corporate secretary, effective July 5. Newborn brings close to three decades of in-house experience to the role.

Newborn will join ABM from data- and cloud-based solutions provider TravelClick Inc., where she served as executive vice president and general counsel. Prior to that, she rose through the ranks at The Reader's Digest Association Inc., now known as Trusted Media Brands Inc., eventually becoming senior vice president, general counsel and secretary, a position she held for around seven years. In this role, she helped the company through two Chapter 11 bankruptcy filings, one in 2009 and another in 2013, according to her LinkedIn page.

For the 16 years before that, Newborn held senior in-house counsel roles at RDA, with responsibilities ranging from acting as a close business adviser to division presidents for three standalone RDA subsidiaries, to playing a leading role in significant corporate transactions at the parent company. In a previous interview with Corporate Counsel, Newborn, who was hired to go in-house at Reader's Digest at just 28 years old, said “it was a year or two earlier than I wanted to [go in-house],” adding, “but you don't turn that kind of opportunity down.”
