WeWork, the New York-based, co-working giant, has promoted in-house legal lead Jen Berrent to chief operating officer. She joined the company as general counsel in 2014 and was later promoted to chief legal officer and chief culture officer. “An agent of positive change at WeWork even before she officially joined the team, Jen will continue to help us reimagine what WeWork—and indeed what a company—can be,” WeWork said in its announcement.

A WeWork spokeswoman said Berrent was not available for an interview and forwarded an announcement sent to WeWork employees about the promotion.

As reported by the tech news publication TechCrunch, Berrent's promotion was announced in a company call on July 12. WeWork co-founder Miguel McKelvey moved into the chief culture officer position left vacant by Berrent's promotion. In that role, Berrent worked on ensuring the company's culture remained the same as WeWork ballooned in size and employee head count. She said in an interview with Built In NYC that, as chief culture officer, she focused on providing career growth and support to the relatively young employees, and she created a “culture committee” and installed “culture ambassadors”—essentially, senior officers that are go-to channels for employee concerns.
