A First Amendment lawyer representing white nationalist Richard Spencer said Tuesday he was working with the University of Florida to choose an alternative date for Spencer to speak on campus since the school canceled an earlier engagement.

The apparent cooperation occurred after an exchange of letters late last week between the school's acting general counsel, Amy Hass, and Spencer's lawyer, Gary Edinger of Gary S. Edinger & Associates in Gainesville.

Edinger wrote the university on Aug. 31 that unless the school complied with Spencer's request to speak on campus, he would file a federal lawsuit alleging a violation of the First Amendment. The university had originally scheduled Spencer to speak on Sept. 12, but then canceled the event after a crowd at a similar speech in Charlottesville, Virginia, turned violent last month.
