Tonya Robinson has been named general counsel of KPMG.

The Obama administration alum's appointment as the top lawyer with the New York-based tax, audit and advisory firm was effective as of Oct. 1, according to a press release issued Monday.

She replaces GC of 12 years Joseph Loonan, who will stay with the company as special counsel to the chairman.

Loonan held various positions with KPMG over the past three decades.

Robinson for the past year served as acting general counsel of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development in Washington, D.C., after joining the agency in 2014 as principal deputy GC for the agency, according to her LinkedIn profile.

Prior to her work with HUD, Robinson was part of President Barack Obama's Domestic Policy Council as special assistant to the president for justice and regulatory policy for two years.

She also worked as a partner at Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr for several years.

In Monday's press release, KPMG chairman and chief executive Lynne Doughtie said Robinson will oversee attorneys, auditors and an advisory personnel who are part of “a strong group of professionals that Joe Loonan has built and led since 2005.”

“We are very pleased to have Tonya at the firm and look forward to her contributions,” Doughtie added.
