Jeffrey Yin has been named general counsel for XO Group Inc.
The New York-based company is best known for its wedding planning site The Knot. It also owns pregnancy and parenting site The Bump, home decorating site The Nest and event marketplace GigMasters.
“It has premier brands that guide couples through important life milestones,” Yin told Corporate Counsel. “It's gratifying to be a part of that experience.”
Yin, who stepped into the role this week, most recently served as GC for boutique investment bank The Alberleen Group. Prior to joining Alberleen in 2015, Yin had served as the chief compliance officer and general counsel of Medallion Financial Corp. for about a decade.
Yin said the transition to his new role isn't as big of a leap as it might sound. “It's a public company and there's a certain rhythm to public companies,” he said. “During my two-decade career working with small and middle market companies, I have a particular longevity with the market and companies of this size, so it's a really good fit.”
In one sense, Yin said he feels like he has “come full circle.” Several years ago when Yin worked as an associate at Brobeck, Phleger & Harrison between 2000 and 2003, he was involved with some of the firm's work with The Knot.
He said he wasn't the main lawyer on the account, but helped with some of the wedding brand's corporate and securities work. “I think it is a fabulous brand that has withstood the test of time,” Yin said.
After working with Brobeck, he was an associate with Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe for two years before he moved in-house.
Yin declined to provide specifics on the size of the legal department at XO Group, but a LinkedIn search indicates there are at least two other in-house lawyers and a head of legal and internal audit.
“I'm excited to welcome Jeffrey to XO Group,” said Mike Steib, CEO of XO Group Inc., in a press release Tuesday. “He's not only an expert legal adviser, but a strong, strategic business leader. His ability to apply his insights as a legal professional while keeping the business strategy top of mind will be a key asset to our executive team and company.”
