Lions Gate Entertainment Inc. executive vice president and general counsel Audrey Lee is stepping into a new spotlight as general counsel of entertainment company Starz Inc.
Starz, a Lions Gate subsidiary that is home to shows such as “American Gods” and “Outlander,” announced Tuesday that Lee will join its Beverly Hills office as the new GC. She's replacing chief legal officer David Weil, who's been with the company since 2014. Weil will stay at Starz in a consulting role.
“Audrey's broad legal experience in the entertainment industry makes her the ideal choice to lead the Starz legal team as the network evolves and thrives with the growing original programming slate,” said Chris Albrecht, president and CEO of Starz. “David has been instrumental in charting the strategic direction for the Starz businesses over the past several years and we thank him for his invaluable contributions to Starz and its evolution into a global media brand.”
As GC, Lee, who was not immediately available for comment, will report directly to Albrecht. She'll be in charge of developing the company's strategies around business and legal affairs. Lee will handle affiliate negotiations, content acquisition and production, litigation and compliance.
And she's got years of experience in the entertainment industry working on these types of matters. At Lions Gate, Lee dealt with M&A deals and entertainment-specific legal issues related to subscription video on demand services, merchandise and video games.
Before that, she spent nearly 15 years as senior vice president of legal affairs at Sony Pictures Entertainment Inc. overseeing legal work for home entertainment and television distribution in the United States and abroad. She's also worked in-house as an associate general counsel for startup studio Idealab, according to her LinkedIn.
Lee made her move in-house after nearly four and a half years as an associate at the international law firm of Latham & Watkins, where she got her start dealing with M&A, securities and intellectual property licensing. She holds a J.D. from the University of Chicago and an MBA from UCLA.
“I'm delighted to join Chris and his leadership team,” Lee said in a press release. “I look forward to helping chart the course for the business during a time of rapid change for our industry.”
