Richard Werber, an Herbalife Ltd. lawyer who was named acting general counsel last summer, has been promoted to chief legal officer.

The Los Angeles-based nutrition and supplement company announced that Werber will assume his new position effective May 1. At the same time, current senior vice president, deputy GC and chief compliance officer Henry Wang will become executive vice president and general counsel.

Werber was named acting GC after the company's previous top lawyer was demoted in the aftermath of a $200 million settlement with federal regulators over allegations of deceiving customers.

An Herbalife spokesperson did not immediately respond to an emailed request for comment about the moves. A company statement says the executive organization restructure, which includes several promotions on the business side as well, is “consistent with the company's succession strategy.”

Werber took over as acting GC last June, one month after he started at the company, after the previous GC, Mark Friedman, was removed from that role to work on special projects, Reuters reported at the time. In 2016, Friedman had signed the company's consent order settling charges by the Federal Trade Commission that alleged that Herbalife had deceived consumers with the promise that they could become their own boss by selling the company's line of nutrition products, although many made scant profits and others lost money.

Before joining Herbalife, Werber was vice president, general counsel and secretary at nutrition and supplement company Rexall Sundown Inc. Prior to that, he was a partner at several law firms, including Holland & Knight, according to an online company biography.

Wang joined Herbalife from California firm Lee, Tran, Liang and Wang, according to the biography. Prior to that, he was a partner at Manatt, Phelps & Phillips and Reed Smith.
