Symetra Financial Corp. has named a new top lawyer following the retirement of its former general counsel.

Jacqueline Veneziani will be the diversified financial services company's next general counsel, senior vice president and secretary. She formally steps into the role April 1, according to an announcement Thursday. She succeeds David Goldstein, who will retire after more than six years in the GC seat.

In Veneziani's new role, she will oversee the law and compliance departments for the Bellevue, Washington-based company that provides employee benefits, annuities and life insurance through a national network.

She joined the legal department in 1998 and most recently served as senior vice president, deputy GC and assistant secretary of Symetra Life Insurance Co.

“Jacquie has built an outstanding track record of success at Symetra over the past 20 years. She is a strong leader, known for her proactive and collaborative approach,” said president and CEO Margaret Meister, in a press release Thursday. “With her broad experience and deep knowledge of the company, Jacquie will continue to be a valuable contributor as we pursue Symetra's growth strategies.”

The company did not comment beyond the announcement of Veneziani's promotion.

Goldstein, according to the company's announcement, was heavily involved in Symetra's acquisition by Sumitomo Life in February 2016.

“I would like to thank David for his leadership of Symetra's exceptional legal organization,” Meister said, adding that he was a “leading force behind Symetra's major corporate initiatives.”
