An experienced in-house attorney in the entertainment and media industries, Antonious Porch, has been appointed general counsel at the world's largest music and audio platform, SoundCloud.

Porch will lead the legal affairs and public policy strategy team at SoundCloud in New York, in addition to supervising its global team in areas including content licensing and data protection, according to an announcement from the company Monday.

The new GC comes from Shazam, a media company known for its app, which identifies music and television through sound clips. Previously, Porch served as vice president and deputy general counsel at Nickelodeon and vice president, senior counsel of technology and kids compliance at Viacom Inc.

“Having led the legal teams at premier consumer digital music and media companies, Antonious is the ideal addition to ensure SoundCloud leads the way for audio creators and listeners to experience all forms of audio from around the globe—from original tracks to the latest remixes,” said Michael Weissman, the company's chief operating officer, in the announcement of Porch's hire. “I could not be more excited to welcome him to the team.”

SoundCloud did not immediately respond to request for further comment on Porch's new position.

Earlier in his career, Porch also worked at Classic Media, which is now part of NBC Universal, and at Latham & Watkins and Morrison & Foerster.

“SoundCloud is the world's leading open music and audio platform, with a passionate community of creators and listeners who are driving what's new and next in music culture,” Porch said in the announcement of his hire. “I'm excited to join the team, and shape the strategies and policies that will support this one-of-a-kind creative community and content experience.”

Aside from a long resume of in-house positions, Porch has also been involved in advocacy for diversity through the Council of Urban Professionals.

“I think in a world of winners and losers the playing field has to be even for everyone,” he said in a video posted on the council's website. “I think that folks ought to have an opportunity to bring their passions, their skills and really their efforts to bear.”
