Miramax has hired industry vet Robert Osher as its new chief operating officer and general counsel, the entertainment company's CEO Bill Block announced Monday.
Osher is returning to the company after more than a decade away. He served as co-president of production of Miramax Films from 1997 to 2004, after it was bought by the Walt Disney Co. Los Angeles-based Miramax was originally founded in 1979 by film producer Harvey Weinstein and his brother, Bob.
In addition to serving as its legal boss, Osher will be part of Miramax's task force to grow its strategy in film, television, and through mergers and acquisitions, according to Monday's announcement.
“We are so happy to have Bob be a part of the new Miramax as someone who not only has tremendous understanding of the future of content and platforms, distributions, operations, as well as a familiarity with the extensive and prestigious library of the Miramax brand,” Block said in a statement.
More recently, Osher's worked as an independent consultant for private equity firms, international consulting firms and media companies. He has also been an adjunct professor at the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts since 2007.
Osher worked at Sony Pictures Entertainment for more than a decade in total, serving as COO of Columbia Pictures Motion Pictures Group and then as president of Sony Pictures Digital Productions.
He was fired from Sony in February 2015 during an executive shakeup at the company, according to a story published at the time in Variety. This was shortly after his name came up in the infamous Sony hack. Emails leaked from that cyberattack showed that Amy Pascal, who was then co-chairperson of Sony Pictures, had discussed his termination.
Before Sony, Osher was the co-founder, EVP and COO of Turner Pictures Group for two years.
Osher's most recent foray into corporate legal departments was from 1989 to 1995, according to his LinkedIn, when he served as senior vice president, business and legal affairs for Walt Disney Studios. Osher is a graduate of Georgetown University Law School.
“I am really excited to be part of Miramax's new vision under CEO Bill Block and beIN Media,” Osher, who was not immediately available for comment, said in a statement. “The vast Miramax library has so much potential and I am looking forward to working with the team to take it to the next level.”
