Financial services data provider RNN Group has hired Jay Carter as general counsel and chief compliance officer, the company announced Wednesday. Carter comes to the Atlanta-based company from Resurgent Capital Services, where he most recently was senior corporate counsel.
In an interview with Corporate Counsel on Thursday, Carter said he is the startup company's first GC and only in-house lawyer. He said he is particularly excited about “delving into the compliance side” of his new role.
“In addition to making sure we are doing everything we should be doing, which I am sure we are, I want to see if there are any improvements or efficiencies that I can help [RNN] achieve,” Carter said.
According to a company statement, RNN Group was founded in 2012 by former LexisNexis and American Express Co. executives as an alternative solution for post-judgment recovery. It touts itself as the leading provider of centralized verified asset procurement and monitoring solutions.
Carter joined Resurgent Capital Services in Greenville, South Carolina, as staff counsel in 2012, according to his LinkedIn profile. He will remain in Greenville while working for RNN, he said in Thursday's interview.
During his five-plus years at Resurgent, Carter managed thousands of matters in litigation and was extensively involved in compliance and licensing, major acquisitions, contract drafting and negotiations and lobbying efforts in various states.
“It's our mission to become the world's leading and most trusted verification service,” RNN President Donna Weaver said in the statement announcing Carter's appointment. “Since our founding, that has driven us to innovate and serve our clients and partners. Adding Jay to the team will allow us to accomplish our mission in incredible new ways.”
Carter is a graduate of the University of South Carolina, where he earned joint JD and MBA degrees.
