Noble Energy Inc. has named a new general counsel. Rachel Clingman has taken over the legal post for the Houston-based oil and gas company, according to an announcement Monday.

According to a Monday filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission, Clingman will serve as Noble's general counsel, senior vice president and corporate secretary.

Clingman, who was not immediately available for comment, joins the company after most recently serving as GC and vice president for BHP's petroleum and minerals Americas businesses. Before going in-house, she was the partner-in-charge at Eversheds' Houston office.

“I am excited to join such a dynamic and successful company and leadership team,” Clingman said in the announcement. “I look forward to contributing to its continued success.”

Noble CEO David Stover said in the release he is “thrilled” to have Clingman join the team “at a strategically important time in the history of the company.”

Clingman takes over the role after former GC Arnold Johnson departed last November. Johnson joined the company in 2001 as associate GC. He was promoted to the top lawyer spot in 2004.

The reason for his abrupt departure is unknown, and a representative for the company did not respond to requests inquiring about the reason behind his resignation, which occurred on a Sunday in November and was effective immediately.

A Nov. 16 SEC filing from Noble said only that four days earlier, Johnson had resigned to “pursue personal interests.”

Clingman's salary has not been made public, but she is a named officer of the company, according to an SEC filing. Her predecessor, Johnson, most recently received nearly $2.5 million in total compensation last year, which excludes the additional incentive plan awards he forfeited upon his departure.

Aaron Carlson, former deputy GC, served as the interim GC in Johnson's absence. Carlson has since been named Noble's vice president, U.S. onshore land and marketing, a company spokesperson confirmed.
