Apparently the lessons of the 2008 economic crisis did not sink in fast enough at the brokerage firm Merrill Lynch, Pierce, Fenner & Smith Inc.

The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission said Tuesday that Merrill Lynch will pay more than $15 million to settle charges that its employees misled customers into overpaying for residential mortgage-backed securities.
