A major global alternative legal service provider seeking to change the business of law has had some big developments on its own leadership team this summer.
Axiom Global Inc. announced on Wednesday that it has hired Lisa Young as its new general counsel. Young, who started work at the company in August, comes to Axiom from the GC role at Enova International, a tech-driven online lender.
Young told Corporate Counsel she has three in-house lawyers on her current team whose permanent job is to support Axiom's business.
But when legal needs extra hands on deck or a specialized perspective, Young said she turns to the “Axiom talent bench” for cost-effective short-term help.
The company provides contracting and compliance tech solutions as well as outsourced legal talent to in-house departments, so Young doesn't have to look far for extra lawyers.
“I'm trying to be a good model for our clients,” she said.
Young used to be one of those clients. She used Axiom while at Enova, and her positive experience was one reason she eventually opted to join the New York-based company. Young is based in Chicago, where Axiom has one of its many U.S. and international offices.
Before Enova, Young held in-house roles at JPMorgan Chase and associate roles at McGuireWoods, Hogan Lovells and Goldberg Kohn. She earned her law degree at Northwestern University.
Young is not Axiom's only recent leadership hire. In June, the legal firm brought on a new chief information officer, Cathy Johnson. The new CIO, who is based in Bellevue, Washington, said she and Young have worked together on a number of issues already, including intellectual property and contracts.
The two both noted the position of women in leadership at Axiom. The company's chief executive officer, Elena Donio, is also a woman.
“I was absolutely excited to join the leadership team that included two other women, Elena and Cathy,” Young said. “All too often in my career I've been the only woman around the table. It's extremely refreshing to be part of a culture that appreciates diversity in so many different ways.”
In a statement Wednesday, Donio also expressed excitement over the two new hires, and the role of women leaders at the company.
“It's been fantastic watching these two high-powered women take their seats at the table. They bring technical depth in their roles and the leadership capacity to help us drive through our next phase of evolution and beyond,” Donio said.
