The Pittsburgh Penguins announced on Monday that a former chief of staff to Pittsburgh's mayor will be taking over as the team's top lawyer in November.
The five-time Stanley Cup winners said in a news release that Kevin Acklin, currently the chief legal officer for Peoples Natural Gas Co., will take on the role of the team's senior vice president and general counsel on Nov. 1.
“It is a dream job for me. I was born and raised here in Pittsburgh. I have a love for this city and a love for hockey. I have a lot of respect for the team and am looking forward to building upon the successes that the Penguins have had,” Acklin said in a phone call.
David Morehouse, the Penguins' president and CEO, said he looks forward to working with Acklin in a professional capacity.
“We've worked closely with Kevin over the past five years during his time with the city and Peoples Natural Gas and have always been very impressed with his work ethic, his intelligence and—maybe most importantly—the relationships he's developed with people throughout the city and the region,” Morehouse said. “His experience in legal affairs, in government and in helping to rebuild our city make him a perfect fit for the Penguins as we move forward.”
Acklin, 42, will be replacing Travis Williams. Williams, who acted as both the chief operating officer and general counsel for the Penguins, was hired by the New York Islanders. It is not clear exactly what that role will be. The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported that he will take on a “larger role” with the Islanders. Williams started working for the Penguins as their general counsel in 2008 and, according to his LinkedIn profile, was named the COO in 2011.
Taking over where Williams left off, Acklin will be responsible for the development of the former Civic Arena site.
Pittsburgh's mayor, William Peduto, said that Acklin's hiring will make the city's relationship with the Penguins even stronger. Acklin was formerly Peduto's chief of staff from 2013 to 2017.
“This is good news for the Lower Hill and good news for affordable, equitable and inclusive development in Pittsburgh,” Peduto said in the press release. “We have a strong partnership with the Penguins already, and Kevin taking on this new role will only make the relationship between the team and the community stronger, and provide a boost to the 28-acre development.”
Before working as the chief of staff for Peduto, Acklin worked as a partner at Saul Ewing Arnstein & Lehr; a partner at Leech Tishman Fuscaldo & Lampl; and has held associate roles at Ropes & Gray, K&L Gates and Morgan, Lewis & Bockius.
Acklin currently serves as chairman of the Urban Redevelopment Authority of Pittsburgh. He will be stepping down from that role at its next meeting on Thursday, according to the news release.
Acklin graduated from Georgetown University Law Center in 2001.
