WeWork has appointed Jared DeMattheis as its new global general counsel, after previously serving as the company's deputy GC.

WeWork's previous GC Peter Greenspan will now take on a role as global head of real estate and special counsel, where he will oversee all of the US-based workspace company's real estate endeavours.

DeMattheis began his career as an associate at US firm Cravath, Swaine & Moore. Before joining WeWork in early 2015, he served as counsel at WilmerHale, where he focused on mergers and acquisitions and capital markets transactions. DeMattheis will now lead WeWork's global legal team, which spans 23 countries.

WeWork chief operating officer and chief legal officer Jennifer Berrent said: "Jared is one of the finest attorneys that I have had the privilege of working alongside these past few years. An incredibly diligent and thoughtful worker, he is respected by his peers and he embodies WeWork's mission and values. There is no one more capable to lead our global legal team and I am extremely excited to see what he will accomplish."

Earlier this year, WeWork appointed Sarah Nelson Smith as its first-ever European general counsel. Joining from KFC, where she was European legal chief officer, Nelson Smith now handles legal matters in Europe, where WeWork has 11 different bases providing shared work spaces for technology startup subculture communities.
