It didn’t take long for penalties to be imposed for alleged violations of the General Data Protection Regulation—action that should be a wake-up call for health care providers, namely hospitals, experts said.

Last week, it was announced that Portuguese hospital Central Hospital of Barreiro Montijo was fined 400,00 euros—about $453,000—by the country’s data protection supervisory authority for allowing too many users to have access to patient data in the hospital’s patient management system, according to Portuguese and other news reports. The reports said that nearly 1,000 users were found to have an account with the same level of access as a doctor, although only about 300 doctors worked at the hospital.
