The German federal police raid Thursday on the Frankfurt headquarters of Deutsche Bank AG and five other sites on suspicion of money laundering suggests the bank and its in-house counsel may have failed to gain the trust of its regulators, according to one attorney.

Julie Myers Wood, lawyer and CEO of Guidepost Solutions LLC, an investigations, corporate compliance and security consulting firm with offices in New York and Washington, D.C., said a lesson for general counsel from this experience is “it is critically important to gain the trust of the regulators when you are cooperating.” The firm also has offices throughout the United States and in England and Singapore.
