Notre Dame, Indiana-based St. Mary's College has appointed a seasoned higher ed in-house lawyer as its general counsel.

New legal leader Martha McCampbell joins St. Mary's from nearby Indiana University South Bend, where she served as director of diversity, equity and inclusion and deputy Title IX coordinator. She's replacing Cristal Brisco, who spent less than a year as GC before she was appointed as a magistrate to the St. Joseph Circuit Court, according to her LinkedIn page.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to contribute to the Saint Mary's tradition of educating women with a sense of purpose and social responsibility” McCampbell said in a press release. “The values of community, faith and justice that infuse the college will be a continual source of inspiration.”

Nancy Nekvasil, the president of the all-women Catholic university, announced McCampbell's hiring Monday. According to the South Bend Tribune, Nekvasil stepped into the interim role last month after St. Mary's president Janice Cervelli abruptly resigned without publicly stating the reason for her departure.

McCampbell starts Tuesday. And it won't be not her first time as a school's general counsel. Prior to her time at Indiana University McCampbell served as the general counsel for Lincoln Memorial University. She also led the Harrogate, Tennessee-based liberal arts school's legal department from 2011 to 2015.

McCampbell began her career as trial counsel for the Knox County, Tennessee Law Director's Office. In that role, she also served as in-house counsel for Knox County Schools, which had 88 schools and approximately 60,000 students, according to Monday's press release.

McCampbell holds a JD from the University of Tennessee.

“Marty has a strong record of success throughout her diverse legal career,” Nekvasil said. “With significant higher-education experience, she brings a wealth of knowledge about the industry that will make her a valuable addition to our leadership team.”
