Former Nissan Motor Corp. Inc. senior counsel Betsy Phillips has left the carmaker to join Nokian Tyres PLC. as associate general counsel.

Phillips is working at Nokian's North American base in Nashville, Tennessee, but will manage legal affairs in collaboration with leaders at the company's headquarters in Nokia, Finland, according to a report from a trade publication.

She joins Nokian as the company builds its first North American manufacturing facility in Dayton, Tennessee, where it expects to begin producing tires in 2020. The $360 million factory will have the capacity to turn out 4 million tires a year and will also have a distribution facility that can store 600,000 tires, according to Nokian.

The factory is part of Nokian's plan to to double its sales in North America within the next five years.

An attempt to speak with Phillips on Friday was not immediately successful.

Before joining Nokian in November, Phillips had served as Nissan's senior counsel at Nissan North America, Inc. in Franklin, Tennessee, since 2012, according to her LinkedIn profile. She is a 2007 graduate of the University of Tennessee School of Law and, early in her career, worked as a paralegal at Covington & Burling then as an associate at Sherrard Roe Voigt & Harbison.

On Nov. 19, former Nissan chairman Carlos Ghosn was arrested in Tokyo on accusations of failing to report $44 million in income, among other charges, along with former director Greg Kelly. Ghosn was indicted in December. The initial investigation is ongoing and expanding, according to news reports.
