Chicago-based Adtalem Global Education Inc. announced that senior vice president and general counsel Stephen Beard was promoted to the role of chief operating officer and GC, about a month after the company divested DeVry University and its Keller Graduate School of Management.

According to a news release, Beard's promotion was effective Jan. 9. In his new role, he will be responsible for the company's strategy and innovation, corporate development and investor relations activities, the news release stated.

He is Adtalem's first COO, a company spokesperson said in an e-mail.

Beard has been with the company since last February, when he was hired as GC, overseeing global legal, governance and risk and security matters. He previously was executive VP, chief administrative officer and GC at Heidrick & Struggles International Inc., the nation's oldest executive search firm and the world's second-largest publicly held search firm. There he led a five-attorney legal team with a heavily transactional workload, according to an October 2014 profile of Beard in Corporate Counsel sister publication The National Law Journal. Previously, he was an associate for about four years at Schiff Hardin's corporate and securities practice in Chicago, according to his LinkedIn profile.

“Since joining Adtalem, Steve has proven himself as an expert in legal, risk and governance areas, and as a highly valued advisor to our leadership team and Board of Directors,” Adtalem president and CEO Lisa Wardell said in the statement announcing Beard's promotion. “His ability to thoughtfully navigate highly complex issues—combined with his bias for action in implementing solutions—will enable our team to drive revenue and profitability growth.”

As part of a shift in for-profit institutions moving from public status to a different or private status, according to a report in Inside Higher Ed, Adtalem announced last month its divestment of DeVry and Keller. It currently is the parent organization of Adtalem Educacional do Brasil, American University of the Caribbean School of Medicine, Association of Certified Anti-Money Laundering Specialists, Becker Professional Education, Chamberlain University, EduPristine, Ross University School of Medicine and Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine.
