A private asset management firm based in New York announced that its managing director and deputy general counsel is now general counsel and chief compliance officer.
Matthew Kane began his role as Z Capital Group LLC's top lawyer Monday. In the role he will give legal advice on value-oriented private equity transactions in due diligence, legal oversight of portfolio companies, mergers and acquisitions and litigation. He has also been appointed to Z Capital's management committee.
“I am pleased to join the executive team at Z Capital with whom I have had the opportunity to work closely for over nearly a decade,” Kane said in the press release. “I am excited to take on this new role and continue leveraging my legal and compliance knowledge to further Z Capital's success for our investors.”
Kane joined Z Capital in 2014 as managing director and deputy general counsel. Before that, he worked as an associate at Storch Amini and Willkie Farr & Gallagher. He has also worked as a finance associate at the American Institutes for Research. He graduated from the Duke University School of Law in 2003.
Kane replaces Martin Auerbach as the company's legal leader. A spokesperson said he left the company in 2018 to return to private practice.
James Zenni, the CEO of Z Capital, said in the press release that Kane's experience makes him an ideal leader of the legal department.
“Matt's knowledge of Z Capital, breadth of relevant legal experience and record of accomplishments in our industry, coupled with his proven leadership, make him the ideal candidate to manage our legal strategies and lead our legal and compliance teams,” Zenni said. “Matt has been a valued and trusted counselor since joining the firm nearly five years ago, and prior to that, in his role as outside counsel to the firm. I look forward to the continued benefit of his strategic advice to support Z Capital's current and long-term growth objectives.”
Z Capital is a privately held alternative asset management firm, which has over $2.3 billion of regulatory assets. It manages opportunistic, value-oriented private equity and credit funds.
