Two universities have announced changes to their legal departments in the past week: one making Harvard's top lawyer its president and another giving its general counsel a vice president role.

The senior vice president, general counsel and deputy to the president of Harvard University is slated to become the president of Gettysburg College, while Lander University announced its general counsel will also be a vice president.

Robert W. Iuliano, a Harvard alum, will begin his role as president of Pennsylvania's Gettysburg College on July 1, following the retirement of current president Janet Morgan Riggs.

“I leave Harvard to join a community that truly inspires me,” Iuliano said in the press release. “I am honored beyond words by the invitation to serve as Gettysburg College's 15th President. I look forward to taking all I have learned throughout my career and helping the faculty, students, and staff, in the words of Gettysburg's motto, to 'do great work.' Like Harvard, Gettysburg is infused by its history but has a restless ambition as it looks to its future. I am excited for the opportunity to have a role in shaping that future and ensuring that Gettysburg continues to afford its students an unparalleled educational experience.”

According to a report on Harvard's website, President Lawrence Bacow indicated he would begin the process of seeking a replacement for Iuliano in the coming weeks.

Iuliano first worked as an associate for Boston-based law firm Choate, Hall & Stewart after graduating from the University of Virginia Law School. He has also worked as a U.S. assistant attorney in Boston, where he prosecuted organized crime. Iuliano became vice president and general counsel of Harvard in 2003.

Lander University in Greenwood, South Carolina, announced Friday that its general counsel, Crystal Rookard, has been promoted to the role of vice president and general counsel. She began working as the general counsel of the school in 2017. She is a graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Law.

“I'm excited to be a part of the Lander University family,” Rookard said in a statement. “My career passion is working for the public interest, and I firmly believe that education is a powerful means for self-improvement and improving our society.”

Lander's vice president for enrollment and access management, Andy Benoit, said in the announcement that Rookard has made Lander a better place.

“As a colleague, she has helped our divisions make strides in matters related to legal compliance, operational policy, human resources and staff development,” Benoit said. “Crystal has proven to be a consummate professional committed to helping our entire University community reach its potential.”
