Airline-owned payment network Universal Air Travel Plan Inc. has appointed Dave Goldwin, former in-house attorney for WebMD LLC, as its new chief legal officer.

UATP announced Monday it had hired Goldwin and three other executives as part of a strategy to grow the company's corporate charge and alternative forms of payment, or AFP, processing business. AFP gives customers the option of paying without using debit or credit cards. UATP's AFP partners include PayPal, Chase Pay and Alipay.

UATP also recently partnered with Expedia Inc., Travelocity and Orbitz LLC, which now accept UATP payments for airline tickets purchased in the U.S.

The world's airlines own Washington, D.C.-based UATP, a private payment network that allows airlines to avoid credit card fees when corporate clients use their UATP cards to purchase tickets.

The company recently reported 9 percent growth in year-over-year charge volume and 11 percent year-over-year growth for AFP processing—an all-time charge volume high for the 83-year-old business.

Goldwin will represent UATP on commercial and legal affairs, international issues and corporate governance matters relating to the organization's shareholders and board of directors.

He joins UATP from payment processing company TSYS Acquiring Solutions LLC, where he served as senior director and senior associate general counsel, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Earlier in his career, Goldwin worked as an associate general counsel for WebMD, an online provider of health and medical news and information. He also had a stint as director of corporate development for Global Collect, another payment service provider.

Goldwin stated in an email that he was joining a “truly remarkable organization” and was “extremely grateful for the opportunity to … contribute to delivering superior results for our shareholders, corporate travel buyers, and merchants.”

UATP also hired Zach Ornelas, a former member of the American Express global corporate payments teams, as vice president of global network sales; recruited Rachel Morowitz from Capital One Bank to serve as vice president of AFP; and appointed Charisse Chisolm as vice president of business development.

“With their industry experience and expertise, I am confident that they will play integral roles in the growth of UATP's Charge Card and AFP Processing businesses,” Ralph Kaiser, president and CEO of UATP, said in a statement. “UATP's leadership has never been stronger.”
