ADT Inc. has brought on a new chief legal officer, about a year after its retiring top attorney helped take the security services giant public.
In addition to chief legal officer, David Smail, a veteran in-house lawyer, has adopted the title of executive vice president at the Boca Raton, Florida-based company, effective immediately. He succeeds P. Gray Finney, who had held the top role there for nearly three years.
Smail joins ADT from tech gaming and lottery company Scientific Games in Las Vegas, where he had been executive vice president and chief legal officer since 2015. Prior to that, he was executive vice president and general counsel at international hospitality company Morgans Hotel Group, according to the statement announcing his hire. He also was executive vice president and group general counsel at global advertising and communications services business Havas S.A.
Smail, who graduated from Harvard Law School in 1991, began his career at Hogan Lovells, previously Hogan & Hartson, where he made partner and remained for nine years, according to his LinkedIn profile. Neither he nor his predecessor Finney were available for an interview.
“David's public company experience and leadership will continue to support ADT's successful execution of our business strategy and will be instrumental in our continued growth,” ADT president and chief executive officer Jim DeVries said in the statement.
DeVries also acknowledged the “tremendous contributions” Finney made to ADT, including “providing thoughtful counsel to the leadership team and always leading with integrity.”
In January 2018, ADT raised nearly $1.42 billion through an initial public offering on the New York Stock Exchange. The 24/7 customer support company has 19,000 employees in the United States and Canada.
