Longtime entertainment lawyer Cheryl Rodman has been cast as chief legal officer at newly announced Spyglass Media Group.

She joins the Los Angeles-based company from Hollywood studio Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Inc., where she had served as executive vice president and deputy general counsel since 2012. The move is a return to familiar territory, however, as Rodman previously served as general counsel and executive vice president at Spyglass Entertainment, the production, finance and distribution company that Spyglass Media Group Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Gary Barber co-founded.

Through a representative, Rodman declined to comment about her new role but said in a statement that she is “thrilled” to rejoin Barber at Spyglass as it evolves and grows.

On Wednesday, Spyglass Media Group launched in partnership between Barber and Lantern Entertainment co-presidents Andy Mitchell and Milos Brajovic. It is focused on developing premium content for theatrical, network, cable and streaming platforms. The brand currently is  home to reality-TV hits such as “Project Runway” and blockbusters movies such as “The King's Speech” and “Inglourious Basterds.”

In her new position, Rodman, who will report to Barber, will oversee all legal matters and business and legal affairs for the company, including corporate matters and strategic growth initiatives.

“I have had the pleasure of working alongside Cheryl at several companies over the years and always relied on her measured and savvy counsel,” Barber said in a statement announcing her hire. “Cheryl is a powerhouse whose extensive legal experience, negotiating skills, and business acumen will serve our company well as we continue to build Spyglass into a formidable premium content company.”

A graduate of Harvard Law School, Rodman began her career in the White House Office of Presidential Scheduling and Advance. She then was an associate at Troop Meisinger Steuber & Pasich and Akin Gump Strauss Hauer & Feld before joining Spyglass in 2002. Seven years later, she left Spyglass to open her own private practice, Rodman Ventures Inc., which concentrated on entertainment and corporate law, according to a September 2012 Corporate Counsel article about her move to MGM.
