Ingersoll-Rand plc has promoted Evan Turtz, a longtime in-house lawyer at the major global manufacturing company, to serve as its new top lawyer.

Turtz, who joined Ingersoll Rand in 2004, most recently had been vice president, secretary and general counsel at the company's industrial segment since June 2016. He succeeds Maria Green, who plans to retire in June, according to a Monday news statement announcing Turtz's promotion.

In his new role, Turtz will serve as an Ingersoll Rand officer and oversee the company's strategic leadership, as well as its legal and compliance affairs worldwide.

Turtz, who could not immediately be reached for comment, will lead a department that, as of 2014, has 60 in-house lawyers, according to a profile in Corporate Counsel sister publication The National Law Journal, which that year named Ingersoll Rand its Carolinas in-house legal department of the year in the outside counsel management category. The company that makes everything from golf carts to air conditioners, is based in Ireland but has its U.S. headquarters in Davidson, North Carolina.

He also will inherit ongoing asbestos-related litigation in state and federal courts on behalf of some of Ingersoll Rand's wholly owned subsidiaries and former companies, according to the company's fiscal year 2018 annual report to the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

“The vast majority of those claims allege injury caused by exposure to asbestos contained in certain historical products, primarily pumps, boilers and railroad brake shoes,” the form stated. “None of our existing or previously-owned businesses were a producer or manufacturer of asbestos.”

During his nearly 15-year tenure at Ingersoll Rand, Turtz has led the labor and employment practice and served as director of litigation, according to the news statement. Prior to going in-house, he was in private practice, most recently at McCarter & English, it added.

“Evan has strong expertise in corporate law and governance matters, and a deep knowledge of our businesses and global markets,” Ingersoll Rand chairman and chief executive Michael Lamach, said in the statement. “His breadth of legal experience and sound counsel make him a terrific addition to our executive leadership team as we continue to grow our company sustainably.”

Turtz, who earned his law degree from Washington University in St. Louis, also holds a general certificate in government from the London School of Economics and Political Science, according to his LinkedIn profile.
