The chief legal officer of Public Storage is moving out, departing the Glendale, California-based company for a role closer to her family.
Public Storage, a self-storage company, announced in an 8-K filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission on Friday that CLO Lily Hughes is leaving her role to “accept a position as chief legal officer of another public company closer to her family.” Hughes has served as Public Storage's senior vice president, CLO and corporate secretary since January 2015. She did not immediately respond to request for comment.
“Lily has been an outstanding partner, and we are grateful for her integrity and leadership and the many contributions she brought to Public Storage,” said Joe Russell, the president and chief executive officer of Public Storage, in a press release Friday. A spokesperson for the company declined to comment further on Hughes' departure.
She'll be succeeded by Nathaniel Vitan, who currently serves as Public Storage's vice president and chief counsel of litigation and operations. He's previously held in-house roles at Altria Client Services, according to his LinkedIn profile.
Vitan, who has been with the company since 2016, will officially start as CLO on April 20. Public Storage said in a press release that Hughes will continue to work with the legal department until May 31 “in order to ensure an orderly transition.”
“The Public Storage team is keenly focused on succession planning across the company, and we are excited to welcome Nathan to his new role,” Russell said in a press release. “His multi-faceted experience, proven abilities and impeccable character make him well-suited for the position. The company and its shareholders will benefit from his continued leadership going forward.”
It's not clear where Hughes is landing next. Prior to Public Storage, she served as vice president and associate general counsel of mergers and acquisitions and finance at Ingram Micro. She was a partner at Manatt, Phelps & Phillips before moving in-house, according to her LinkedIn profile. Since 2015, she's held leadership roles in the Association of Corporate Counsel Southern California chapter.
Vitan began his corporate legal career at Latham & Watkins after clerking for Judge T.S. Ellis III.
