Amid criticisms over the handling of the two downed Boeing 737 Max 8 flights in the past year, Chicago-based aircraft maker Boeing announced the president of Boeing Japan is the company's new general counsel.

Brett Gerry has been named the company's new legal leader effective immediately. He will relocate from Tokyo to Chicago, according to the press release. He will lead the legal department, join the company's executive council, and report to chairman, president and CEO Dennis Muilenburg.

Gerry began in the legal department at Boeing in 2008 before becoming the president of Boeing Japan. He previously served as vice president and general counsel for Boeing commercial airplanes and chief counsel to Boeing's network and space systems business. Before joining Boeing, Gerry served as chief of staff to the attorney general and deputy assistant attorney general in the National Security Division of the U.S. Department of Justice. He has also worked at Goodwin Procter.

Muilenburg said Gerry has the right mix of legal, business and government experience to succeed as general counsel.

“For more than a decade with Boeing, on assignments across the globe, Brett Gerry has demonstrated all the skills and experiences we're looking for in a general counsel,” Muilenburg said in the press release.

Gerry replaces longtime general counsel J. Michael Luttig. Luttig will stay with the company in a new role as counselor and senior adviser to Muilenburg. He will also continue to hold the title of executive vice president and remain on the company's executive council.

Luttig will continue to handle all legal matters related to the Oct. 29, 2018, Lion Air Flight 610 and the March 10 Ethiopian Airlines 302 accidents.

Muilenburg said Luttig built “the finest legal team in the world” during his time as general counsel at Boeing.

“Judge Luttig is not only a brilliant legal mind, but also a critical voice on all the important issues and opportunities facing our company,” Muilenburg said in the press release.

A spokesperson for the company declined to comment beyond the press release. Gerry and Luttig were not available for comment Wednesday.
