San Jose, California-based Immersion Corp. announced Tuesday it has hired an experienced intellectual property lawyer as its next general counsel.

Immersion announced in a press release that Mike Okada will become general counsel and senior vice president of IP licensing and legal affairs. He will join the company's executive team and manage the company's legal, regulatory and intellectual property affairs. According to a Securities and Exchange Commission filing, Okada will begin his role as the company's top lawyer June 10.

Immersion's CEO, Ramzi Haidamus, said Okada's experience in IP licensing and corporate make him a good fit for the company.

“His depth of expertise in IP licensing and complex transactions with global technology leaders will support the continued growth of our business,” Haidamus said in the press release.

It is not clear if Okada has already started in his role. According to his LinkedIn profile, Okada has worked as the vice president of IP transactions and legal affairs at Dolby Laboratories Inc. since 2006. Okada currently serves as a board member of Circus Center. Okada has also worked at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati and Whitman Breed Abbott & Morgan. Okada is a graduate of the University of Southern California Gould School of Law.

Okada said in the press release that he is excited to work at Immersion.

“I look forward to working with the team to scale adoption of digital touch experiences in the market,” Okada said.

Okada is replacing Amie Peters. According to an SEC filing, Peters works as the company's chief financial officer and general counsel. The filing indicates that she reassigned her role as chief financial officer May 14 and her last day as general counsel will be May 31.

Peters joined Immersion in 2008 and has previously worked at Morrison & Foerster. She is a graduate of the University of California, Davis School of Law. It is not immediately clear if Peters has another job lined up.

“I also want to thank Amie for her support and dedication to the Immersion team and shareholders. Her contributions over the last decade have made a positive and lasting impact on the company,” Haidamus said in the press release.

A spokesperson for the company did not respond to request for additional comment.

Immersion is a touch feedback technology company, which allows users to feel a realistic sense of touch on digital products.
