On the heels of its blockbuster initial public offering, the most successful of the year so far, Beyond Meat has named a new top lawyer.

The El Segundo, California, plant-based meat producer announced Monday it has named Teri Witteman as general counsel and secretary, effective immediately. Witteman joins Beyond Meat from the Los Angeles office of Musick, Peeler & Garrett, where she was a partner specializing in U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission compliance, corporate governance and mergers and acquisitions, according to a news release announcing her hire.

In her new role, Witteman, who could not immediately be reached for comment about her new position, will oversee the company's global legal affairs and compliance functions and serve as a member of its executive team. It was not immediately clear if she is Beyond Meat's first GC.

Founded in 2009, Beyond Meat's stock has ballooned more than 250% to $87 per share since its May 2 IPO. The company is valued at about $5 billion based on investors' belief that the plant-based food market will soar. Its fresh and frozen plant-based proteins currently are sold at more than 30,000 retail and food-service outlets worldwide.

Witteman's “extensive legal, SEC compliance, corporate governance and operational experience in the foodservice industry …  is a great match for Beyond Meat's growth agenda, as we focus on building our brand nationally and globally, while expanding our public-company leadership team,” Ethan Brown, Beyond Meat's president and CEO, said in the company statement.

Witteman, a graduate of the UCLA School of Law, began her legal career in the Los Angeles office of Latham & Watkins, where she focused on corporate finance and mergers and acquisitions.
