An in-house executive at Groupon has left the global e-commerce company to take over as the chief lawyer for cannabis firm Revolution Enterprises.

Alissa “Ali” Jubelirer joined Revolution on Monday as general counsel after spending more than seven years in Groupon's legal department in Chicago, where she most recently served as vice president, deputy general counsel and global employment and chief compliance officer. She joined Groupon as senior corporate counsel.

At Groupon, Jubelirer oversaw employment law issues along with compliance and regulatory matters for the public company. In April, Groupon reported an 8% drop in revenue, which was $578.4 million for the first quarter of 2019.

Before Groupon, Jubelirer was senior counsel of labor and employee relations at Tribune Co., now Tribune Media, for more than six years, according to her LinkedIn profile. She had an earlier stint as an attorney at Seyfarth Shaw, where she focused on employment litigation.

Revolution is based in Elmhurst, Illinois—which recently became the first state to have a legislature legalize the sale and possession of cannabis—but will soon open a headquarters in Chicago and plans to expand nationally. The company has an array of cannabinoid-based brands for medicine, ointments, food, beverages and even pet care products.

Jubelirer, who will manage Revolution's corporate legal and compliance matters, said in a prepared statement that this is a “pivotal time in Revolution's history as dynamics and legal landscape of the cannabis industry are rapidly shifting across the country.”

Revolution CEO Mark de Souza described Jubelirer's appointment as a “major milestone in positioning us for long-term success. Her wealth of experience in a global company that has experienced high growth will be integral to helping shape and execute our future plans.”

Jubelirer's hiring follows several recent appointments to Revolution's board of directors, including Tony Hunter, former CEO of Tribune Publishing and publisher of the Chicago Tribune, and Jim Oliff, former vice chairman and board member of CME Group, a global markets company.
