The general counsel of South San Francisco, California-based Ideaya Biosciences Inc. announced Tuesday that its general counsel has also taken on the role of chief financial officer.

In addition to overseeing the legal department for the biotechnology company, Paul Stone will lead the finance, investor relations and public relations functions of the company.

Stone did not respond to a request for comment Wednesday. It is not clear if he is replacing anyone as the chief financial officer.

Stone previously worked as the senior vice president, general counsel and head of operations of 5AM Ventures, the venture capital company that launched Ideaya Biosciences. According to the press release, he has also served as general counsel at Ethos Pharmaceuticals Inc. and Ilypsa Inc. Stone worked as chief patent counsel at Symyx Technologies Inc. and an associate at Senniger Powers. Stone graduated from the University of Wisconsin Law School in 1995.

Stone also held management and operating roles in other companies launched by 5AM Ventures including Homology Medicines, Cidara Therapeutics and Entrada Therapeutics.

“He is a proven biotechnology executive, and has been instrumental in executing on several key milestones for IDEAYA, including the license of Phase 1/2 PKC inhibitor IDE196 from Novartis, and our initial public offering on Nasdaq,” Yujiro Hata, CEO and president of Ideaya, said in the press release.

There has been a growing trend of legal leaders taking on additional roles in the C-suite. On Monday, Liberty Media's chief legal officer, Rich Baer, was made the company's first chief administrative officer and became responsible for recruitment and talent development along with his legal duties.
