SodaStream International Ltd. announced this week that its former chief legal officer and current deputy CEO will become the company's top executive later this summer.
Eyal Shohat will assume the CEO position on Aug. 1.
“I am honored to receive the baton from Daniel and look forward to continuing to work with him in his new capacity as Chairman. I am also humbled to take on responsibility for this great company and our thousands of employees and their families worldwide,” Shohat said in the press release.
A spokesperson for PepsiCo, the company which owns the Airport City, Israel-based SodaStream, said Wednesday there would no additional comment beyond the press release.
According to the press release, Shohat became CLO of SodaStream in 2010, before the company's initial public offering on Nasdaq. In 2012, he was made the chief corporate development officer and then deputy CEO in 2017. Shohat previously served as the vice president of legal affairs of Frutarom Industries Ltd. Shohat has a Bachelor of Laws degree and an MBA from Tel Aviv University.
Shohat replaces Daniel Birnbaum, who will step down as CEO and become chairman of the company on Sept. 1.
“Eyal has been a partner to me and a key driver of our success, both leading up to and since our integration with PepsiCo,” Birnbaum said in the press release. “Equally important, he shares my passion and commitment to offer the world a great-tasting sparkling water while reducing the use of single-use plastic. I have no doubt the company will continue to thrive under his leadership.”
Shohat's promotion is part of an ongoing trend of high-ranking lawyers being put into CEO positions. In March, Wells Fargo's general counsel, C. Allen Parker, was made the bank's interim CEO. The board has said he will not become the permanent CEO, though a full-time replacement has not been appointed. In May, Fluor Corp. named Carlos Hernandez as its interim CEO. A few weeks later Hernandez was made the permanent CEO. Also in May, Stanley Pierre-Louis was named the permanent CEO of the Electronic Software Association after adding acting CEO to his general counsel position last October.
