Kodwo Ghartey-Tagoe, the South Carolina state president for Duke Energy Corp., was named the company’s chief legal officer Friday.
Ghartey-Tagoe, a native of Ghana, will lead the office of the general counsel, which includes overseeing the company’s legal, corporate governance, ethics and compliance and audit functions. He will also serve as the primary legal adviser to Duke Energy’s board of directors and senior management. He will begin his new role Oct. 1 and work out of the company’s headquarters in Charlotte, North Carolina.
“I am very honored to have been selected for this role. I have truly enjoyed my time leading the Duke Energy team in South Carolina, but I do look forward to getting back to my legal roots in the company and joining a world-class team to address the many challenges and opportunities that come with this critical role,” Ghartey-Tagoe said in an email to Corporate Counsel.
According to his profile on the company’s website, Ghartey-Tagoe joined the company in 2002 as chief regulatory counsel. Since then, he has worked with the company as vice president of legal for Duke Energy’s commercial business organization, general counsel for litigation, and vice president of legal–state regulation for Duke Energy’s franchised electric and gas business. He was made state president for South Carolina in 2017. He previously served as a partner at McGuireWoods in Richmond, Virginia. He graduated from Duke University School of Law.
He replaces Julie Janson, who was made Duke Energy’s president of the Carolinas. Janson has served as the chief legal officer of Duke Energy since 2012, according to her profile on the company website. She joined the company in 1998 as senior counsel.
The company announced Michael Callahan, currently president of investor relations, will take on the new role of state president for South Carolina.
Lloyd Yates, Duke Energy’s executive vice president of customer and delivery operations, said Callahan’s years of experience will help him lead the company’s operations in South Carolina.
“In his new role, he will build on the great progress Kodwo and team have already accomplished, and he will continue to advocate for policies and practices that meet the energy needs of our customers and South Carolina in cost-effective, environmentally sound ways,” Yates said.
