A longtime in-house lawyer at Thomson Reuters has been promoted to general counsel at the global mass media and information firm, the company confirmed in an email to Corporate Counsel.

Thomas “Tom” Kim, previously both chief compliance officer at the $12.2 billion-revenue Thomson Reuters and GC at Global Growth Organization, Thomson Reuters’ emerging markets business, will also serve as company secretary. He has been an in-house attorney at some iteration of Thomson Reuters or its predecessor Reuters for more than 20 years, according to his LinkedIn profile.

Kim, who will be based in Toronto, succeeds Deirdre Stanley, who is leaving the GC seat after more than 11 years but will remain with the company until October to help with the transition, a spokesperson said.

Neither Kim nor Stanley could immediately be reached for comment about their moves.

Prior to joining Thomson Reuters in 1999, Kim was an associate at Baker McKenzie in San Francisco for about a year and a half and started his legal career, after graduating from Stanford Law School, as an associate at Hancock Rothert & Bunshoft, now Duane Morris, also in San Francisco, LinkedIn said.

As chief compliance officer at Thomson Reuters from 2014 to 2016, Kim oversaw compliance across the global enterprise, with 21 subject-matter expert lawyers and compliance professionals in the company’s major business centers, according to a 2016 Corporate Counsel profile of him. As GC for emerging markets, Kim led a function supporting all businesses across Latin America, Africa, the Middle East, Eastern Europe and Asia, with a legal team of 32 legal generalists in 10 regions.

Before these roles, he was based in Hong Kong as GC of Asia for Thomson Reuters’ financial and risk business.
