STORE Capital Corp., one of the largest internally managed net-lease real estate investment trusts in the country, has appointed Chad Freed as general counsel, executive vice president and secretary.
The Scottsdale, Arizona-based company announced Freed’s hiring Monday, his first day on the job. He succeeds Michael Bennett, who joined the firm in 2011 as GC, chief compliance officer and corporate secretary. Bennett received nearly $1.6 million in total compensation, including a base salary of $375,000, last year, according to the company’s latest proxy statements. Bennett died earlier this year, according to a company spokeswoman.
STORE, an acronym for “single tenant operational real estate,” secured a $377 million investment from Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway in 2017. STORE invests in single tenant real estate and has supplied more than $15 billion in real estate mortgage and lease solutions, according to its website. The firm has investments in more than 2,300 property locations in all 50 states.
Freed formerly served for more than 15 years as the top lawyer and executive president of corporate development for Universal Technical Institute Inc., which trains students who want to work as technicians in the transportation industry.
At UTI, Freed oversaw the “overall management of all legal and regulatory issues while providing guidance and direction to senior management and the Board of Directors that reflects sound judgment, strategic vision, and substantive legal knowledge and expertise,” according to his LinkedIn profile.
He began his career with Bryan Cave Leighton Paisner in Phoenix, where he served on the firm’s corporate and transactions team and represented clients in initial public offerings, debt offerings and mergers and acquisitions.
Freed was not immediately available for comment. He is a graduate of Pennsylvania State University and Tulane University Law School.
STORE CEO Christopher Volk said in a written statement that Freed brings “extensive knowledge and experience stemming from 15 years in public company corporate general counsel service.
“In addition to his expertise in the areas of [Securities and Exchange Commission] compliance, corporate governance and risk mitigation, he also oversaw corporate contractual lease relationships with institutional real estate landlords,” Volk added. “As a member of our executive team, Chad’s experience will play a key role in supporting STORE’s continued growth and commitment to best practices in corporate governance.”
