As teams across the National Football League are making final decisions on their 53-man rosters, the New York Jets firmed up its front office by promoting its longtime general counsel to be the team's president.

Hymie Elhai is succeeding Neil Glat, whom the Jets announced Friday is transitioning to a new role as a senior adviser. Elhai will report to chairman and CEO Christopher Johnson and oversee all of the team's business operations. He will also work with head coach Adam Gase and general manager Joe Douglas to integrate business and football operations.

Elhai was hired by the Jets in 2000 as an intern. In 2002, he was hired full time by the organization as manager of legal affairs and business development. Most recently, he held the role of senior vice president of business affairs and general counsel. Elhai graduated from Rutgers Law School, according to his profile on the team's website.

"I have a deep appreciation and respect for this franchise, what it means to our fans, the communities we serve, as well as our business partners," Elhai said in the announcement on the Jets' website.

It is not clear if the team has hired a replacement for general counsel. A representative for the Jets did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Tuesday. Elhai could not be reached for additional comment.

Elhai's promotion to president is part of an ongoing trend of general counsel and chief legal officers being promoted or hired to roles outside of the legal department. In August, Jessica Berman, formerly the deputy general counsel of the National Hockey League, was made the deputy commissioner of the National Lacrosse League.
