Boston-based Carbonite Inc. announced this week a newly appointed interim general counsel, chief operating officer, chief product officer and chief technology officer to accelerate the data protection and cybersecurity company's integration of recently acquired Webroot.

Scott Semel, based in Boston, will lead the company's global legal function. He replaces Danielle Sheer, who left the company earlier this year to pursue other opportunities, according to a spokesperson for the company. Sheer had been general counsel at Carbonite since September 2009, according to her LinkedIn profile.

Semel was not immediately available for comment Friday. The company's spokeswoman said it is not clear if Semel is in the running to become the permanent general counsel of Carbonite. Semel will report to the company's interim CEO, Steve Munford.

Semel most recently served as the acting general counsel and chief people officer at Information Builders Inc. He has also held general counsel roles at Intralinks Holdings Inc., Novell Inc., Tele Atlas, Ascential Software, Navisite, Designs Inc. and Standard Financial. He has also worked as an associate general counsel at IBM and served as an associate at Friedman & Atherton.

The interim general counsel starts at Carbonite after its March acquisition of Webroot, a private internet security company based in Broomfield, Colorado, for $618.5 million. Amid the transition, president and CEO Mohamad Ali stepped down, with Munford named to the interim role in July.

The company also announced Wednesday that John Post was named chief operating officer, Chad Bacher chief product officer, and Hal Lonas chief technology officer. All of the executive additions were effective immediately.

"I am pleased to announce the complete Carbonite executive team; this combination of proven leaders is the team Carbonite needs to accelerate our integration with Webroot, move the company forward and successfully deliver on our plans," Munford said. "I've taken the time to get to know these leaders and their respective teams and I am confident that this is the right group of executives to move the company forward."
