A Canadian cannabis company announced Wednesday the hiring of an experienced in-house attorney to lead its legal function.

Linda Menzel will be general counsel at the Ontario-based Ignite International Brands Ltd. with a base in Toronto, according to the press release. It is not clear if Menzel is the company's first general counsel or if she replaced someone. The company did not immediately return requests for comment.

Menzel most recently worked as the vice president of legal affairs and general counsel of Loot Crate Inc. She was an associate general counsel at Playboy Enterprises Inc. and also held in-house positions at Nervous Tattoo Inc. and Cygne Designs Inc. Her law firm experience includes stints at Quarles & Brady and Gimbel, Reilly, Guerin & Brown.

The company, which is listed on the Canadian Stock Exchange, also announced Wednesday the promotion of Gene Bernaudo as its global head of cannabis. He previously served as the vice president of operations at Ignite where he helped the launch of CBD, or cannabidiol, products in England.

"Ignite is rapidly expanding as a brand and our world-class leadership team reflects the opportunity in front of us," Ignite's president Jim McCormick said in the press release. "We are excited to highlight the appointment of Linda and Gene to the leadership team bringing their great experience and passion for the Ignite brand."
