Craig Zahnd, general counsel of the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City.

Craig Zahnd, newly named general counsel and chief compliance officer at the Federal Reserve Bank of Kansas City in Missouri, was drawn to the bank's public interest mission.

Zahnd, who started his new job Nov. 18, told Corporate Counsel, "The Federal Reserve's mandate is truly unique, and its focus solely on the public interest will no doubt raise many new issues for me to consider. I am looking forward to the challenge."

Since 1977, the Federal Reserve's congressional mandate has been to promote the goals of maximum employment, stable prices and moderate long-term interest rates.

Zahnd will also serve as adviser to the bank's management committee. He praised the Federal Reserve's reputation as a leader in the financial services space, fostering a sound banking system.

"I was mostly attracted to a leadership team dedicated to the bank's mission of working in the public's interest by supporting economic and financial stability," he added.

Other than the bank's unique mandate, Zahnd said leading the legal division will be a natural fit for him. "Coming from a financial services background, and in particular from a company that plays a key role in our society's resilience, many of the legal and compliance issues will sound familiar," he explained.

He has nearly 30 years of legal experience and joins the bank from Swiss Reinsurance Co., where he served as managing director and general counsel of the Americas reinsurance business.

Bank president and CEO Esther George said in a statement, "Craig is an established leader in the legal and business community. He brings a passion for developing others and serving as a strategic business partner. I am delighted to have Craig join the team."

During his 12 years at Swiss Re, Zahnd oversaw 22 attorneys who handled a variety of legal and regulatory matters throughout the Americas. He also served on several boards of directors for Swiss Re companies.

Prior to becoming Swiss Re's general counsel, he was managing director and head of its dispute resolution and litigation unit for two years. Prior to joining Swiss Re, he served eight years in-house at GE Capital, the financial services division of General Electric Company, including four years as associate general counsel for litigation. Previously, he was a trial attorney with Shook, Hardy & Bacon in Kansas City.

Zahnd earned a law degree from the University of Virginia School of Law.
