Mitsubishi Motors North America Inc. announced Monday the hiring of an experienced automotive in-house attorney to become its executive vice president and general counsel.
A former in-house lawyer for Nissan North America Inc. and USA Truck Inc., Katherine Knight will oversee all legal services at Mitsubishi Motors and provide counsel on legal, risk, business and operational matters for the company. She will be based in the company's new headquarters in Franklin, Tennessee, and reports to Mitsubishi Motors North America CEO Fred Diaz.
"Katherine is exactly the type of leader we are looking for as we reinvent every aspect of our business at Mitsubishi Motors," Diaz said in a press release. "With a background inside and outside the corporate world, she brings the blend of experience and passion for the craft that will both protect and promote MMNA going forward. We're excited to have her join the team."
Knight is taking over for Jorgen Weterrings as general counsel. Weterrings became general counsel in July 2019 when longtime general counsel John McElroy retired. It is not clear if Weterrings is still with the company, although he is still listed as general counsel on the company's website.
A spokesperson for Mitsubishi Motors did not respond to a request for comment Tuesday. Knight did not respond to a message on LinkedIn seeking comment Tuesday.
The Tokyo-based parent company said in June the North American division will be completing its move to the Nashville suburb from Southern California by the end of this year.
Knight has spent a significant part of her career as an in-house attorney. Most recently she served as the general counsel of USA Truck. She has also served as senior counsel at Nissan North America, where she worked on labor and employment, labor relations, compliance and employee benefits. She also served as a senior employment attorney at Dollar General and as assistant general counsel in the Tennessee Department of Transportation, according to her LinkedIn profile.
For law firms, Knight has also worked at Burr & Forman and served as an associate at Baker, Donelson, Bearman, Caldwell & Berkowitz. After graduating from the Vanderbilt University Law School in 2002, she worked as an assistant attorney general in the Tennessee Office of Attorney General.
