Santa Rosa, California-based Union Cannabis Group announced over the weekend it hired its first chief legal officer.
Eli Korer's LinkedIn profile indicates that he has already begun his role as the top lawyer at the cannabis company.
In a press release, Korer said he became interested in the cannabis industry as he began to see its potential for growth. He added Union Cannabis Group is a company that will stand apart from others in the cannabis industry.
"The cannabis industry is edging toward its next great growth phase—the moment that will define the successful companies by their ability to consistently produce effective, high-quality and safe products, and develop and close outstanding commercial transactions that create true value," Korer said.
In an interview on Monday, Korer said the industry will expand in 2020.
"You're going to be finding a lot of large, multi-state operators that are growing or looking to acquire or scale with other companies, as well as people from more traditional industries that want to participate in cannabis," Korer said. "We work with you and your legal and other counsel to develop a solid business and corporate plan, anticipating a potential exit event, and most importantly, to help mitigate risk, which is going to be the largest thing that you need to look for in 2020."
Korer said Union Cannabis Group will be hiring more attorneys in 2020.
"We'll want to add not only attorneys and legal personnel but other professionals in more traditional markets such as finance and business development to fill out the bench to support our clients and partners," Korer said.
He is based in the company's Santa Rosa, California offices.
Korer most recently worked as an attorney at Barnes & Thornburg, where he was in the corporate and business law practice group in Chicago. He has also worked as an attorney at Levin Ginsburg and Krislov & Associates. Korer graduated from Valparaiso University Law School in 2011.
"The cannabis industry, while fast-moving, is still very fragmented in terms of the legal nexus between commercial and regulatory concerns," Sushanta Parikh, CEO of Union Cannabis Group, said in the press release. "Eli's addition to the UCG team pairs deep legal and corporate experience with best-in-class industry acumen. This brings potent value to our consulting clients."
Union Cannabis Group offers design and installation services for cannabis extraction facilities, manufacturing process training, product formulation and brand licensing services.
