Name: Stephanie Resnick
Category: Law Firm: Lifetime Achievement
Firm/Company: Fox Rothschild
Title: Partner
Time in Position: Since 2017
What was your route to the top?
I always wanted to be a trial lawyer, so in the summer after my first year of law school, I pursued an internship at the Philadelphia District Attorney's Office. My first job was in a trial boutique, and after two years I joined the litigation department at Fox Rothschild where I have served as a business trial lawyer for 35 years. I am currently managing partner of the firm's largest office in Philadelphia.
At Fox, I was the first woman elected by her partners to serve on the firm's executive committee and have held numerous leadership positions, including chair of the firmwide litigation department for seven years and chair of the partnership advancement committee for 10 years. I also started the firm's women's initiative many years ago. I have been active in various bar associations and served as chair of the Philadelphia Bar Association's board of governors and judicial selection and retention committee. I also served as the Third Circuit representative to the ABA's standing committee on the Federal Judiciary.
What keeps you up at night?
The practice of law has become more competitive. For my own clients and for the entire firm, it is essential that we be proactive, responsive, efficient and collaborative. At Fox Rothschild, we recognize that it is hugely important to collaborate with our clients and form cost-effective strategies.
Technology also presents major challenges—and opportunities—for law firms. Our clients have many different billing systems and communication guidelines. With the right software, and with Fox Rothschild's terrific administrative support, we are able to ensure that our lawyers make it easy for clients to communicate with us, using the tools they prefer, with clear and concise communications.
What is the best leadership advice you've given or received, and why do you think it was effective?
Never let the competition outwork you. Be aggressive, proactive and advocate for your client as you would advocate for yourself. But also be fair and thoughtful and care about others. To be the best lawyer that you can be, all of these elements are essential.
Looking back, what do you wish you had known when you started out in the legal profession?
Self-doubt and being humble are not negatives. They inspire relationships, loyalty and trust, and they ultimately make you a better person and lawyer.
What is the most valuable career advice anyone has ever given you?
Always work hard and collaboratively, and remember that you are only part of the greater whole. A team approach is always best. Lead by example, as others I admire have done. Push through obstacles and challenges and don't let up. Be tenacious, but know when to compromise. Most of all, conduct yourself in a fair and ethical manner and strive to be the best lawyer and person you can be. A reputation is fragile and takes years to build.
