2019 saw an abnormally high rate of general counsel being promoted to the CEO role, a phenomenon that had existed but reached new heights with corporations tapping the top lawyers to lead in their time of need. Corporate Counsel noticed the spike soon after bank Wells Fargo & Co., still recovering from a fraudulent account scandal that resulted in multiple million-dollar fines, promoted its general counsel C. Some former general counsel received the CEO title after staying at their companies in other business-oriented roles. Companies such as Accenture, Overstock.com Inc. and SodaStream International Ltd. elevated their former top lawyers to head their operations.
