Compensation data firm PayScale Inc., which counts The New York Times Co., T-Mobile USA Inc. and United Healthcare Services Inc. among its more than 8,000 clients, has hired a new general counsel.
Kristin Boraas will join PayScale on March 9 as general counsel after having most recently served as senior director in the corporate legal department of Tableau Software in Seattle, where PayScale is also based. Earlier in her career, she had a stint as a lawyer for Expedia Group.
Boraas succeeds PayScale's first top lawyer, Jessica Nguyen, a former attorney for Microsoft Corp. She has led PayScale's legal department since 2017 and played a key role in the firm's more than $300 million sale to private equity firm Francisco Partners in April 2019, according to her LinkedIn profile.
"Kristin has an impressive background, and I can't wait to watch the next chapter of PayScale's journey," Nguyen said. "I have an exciting new role lined up that will be announced soon."
As PayScale's top lawyer, Boraas will oversee a legal department that is increasing in "scale and complexity," the company stated Thursday in a news release.
"She joins PayScale at a pivotal time, as the company embarks on the next chapter of rapid growth by expanding its footprint and developing new compensation solutions which enable businesses to attract and retain the best talent in their organizations," PayScale added.
Boraas was not available for an interview. But she issued a statement in which she described PayScale as a "values-driven company with a clear vision for helping businesses achieve fair and informed pay practices."
She added that she aims to "create a legal department that can effectively address business issues as they arise so PayScale can more easily bring its innovative compensation solutions to new markets."
Her new boss, PayScale CEO Scott Torrey, stated that Boraas is the right fit to join our team of highly qualified executives. "Her practical approach and ability to put our business goals first will be key as we enter additional markets and forge new partnerships across the industry."
During her six years at Tableau, Boraas was involved in Salesforce.com's $15 billion acquisition of Tableau in August 2019. She also negotiated contracts, dealt with privacy issues, and was involved in the company's international growth.
Earlier in her career, she handled litigation issues for Expedia and also worked at Preston Gates & Ellis, now K&L Gates. She is a graduate of Stanford Law School.
