An increasing number of legal departments are finding ways to shy away from the billable hour as their budgets get tighter and they’re expected to do more with less. Ken Callander, a managing principal at Value Strategies LLC in San Francisco, works with legal departments to get them away from the billable hour, which he says makes law firms more efficient.

Callander honed his skill for finding value-based pricing from 2014 to 2016 while working as the head of legal operations for Uber Technologies Inc. Moving to a value-based pricing system, Callander said, can save a legal department anywhere from 20% to 50% in outside counsel fees.
