Creating a more holistic network of technology solutions can help legal departments better leverage data-driven insights and analytics. However, both the hardware and human cost of moving way from the vertical approach to purchasing that has traditionally dominated legal could be a major deterrent.

Legal departments anxious to leverage the full potential of data analytics to their advantage may find themselves hampered by a purchasing philosophy that has for too long emphasized point solutions over a more holistic approach to internal technology. While technology was made to be upgraded, is the cost of revamping an entire network of solutions enough to dissuade general counsel from taking action?
There are certainly incentives. A holistic approach to legal tech—meaning that systems like e-billing and contact management can talk to each other—makes it easier to organize data and find answers to legal operations queries without having to invest time and effort in organizing the same information manually. Still, many departments may still be falling short of achieving that kind of synchronicity.

The case, filed Oct. 2 in Massachusetts District Court by the Brown Law Firm on behalf of Stephen Austen, accuses certain officers and directors of misleading investors in regard to Symbotic's potential for margin growth by failing to disclose that the company was not equipped to timely deploy its systems or manage expenses through project delays. The case, assigned to U.S. District Judge Nathaniel M. Gorton, is 1:24-cv-12522, Austen v. Cohen et al.
