In-house attorneys who hope to become a member of a corporate board of directors should lead with their industry expertise when applying for those positions, a panel of attorneys and board members said Wednesday during the Association of Corporate Counsel’s virtual summit.

The skills of an attorney can serve a corporate board of directors well, however, boards typically want industry expertise and prior board experience over someone who is going to tell the CEO what they can and cannot do, the panel said in a discussion called “So You Want to Join a Corporate Board?”
